East Caicos; caving, camping, exploring...
-
East Caicos is the only large island that remains uninhabited in the Turks & Caicos.
- It has beautiful beaches, a varied coastline, and a dense interior.
-
There are some impressive caves on the island that can be found by walking inland along an old donkey railway. They were mined for guano over 100 years ago and have been rarely visited since.
-
Expect to get dirty, sweaty, and tired as you explore the array of large rooms, tight passages, and secret entrances scattered throughout the caves.
-
A reasonable level of fitness and agility are required for both the caves and trails.
- You can also walk along the coast and explore the old ruins at Jacksonville. Here you can discover some of the early history of this now deserted island.
-
Reach East Caicos by motorboat or kayak and take the opportunity to explore the neighbouring island of Joe Grant's Cay and the spectaular mouth of the Windward-going-through.
-
Find an old anchor and canon discarded from ships that visited here an age ago.
- Snorkel on some extensive and world-class reefs and dive for conch or lobster to prepare fresh on the beach.
- Day
trips can be made from Middle Caicos or there is a fantastic beach to
camp on at the west end of the island near the Jacksonville ruins.
