Camping
in the Turks and Caicos can essentially be considered wilderness camping; there
are no facilities and everything must be taken in and out with you. Camping is
not advised on the main urbanized islands of Grand Turk and Providenciales but
works well on other inhabited islands such as North Caicos, Middle Caicos and
Salt Cay. The main concern is drinking water as there are no places to collect
natural freshwater in the islands and the less populated islands have minimal
supplies available to purchase. Having said that there are some amazing areas
to camp in the Turks and Caicos and many are quite accessible particularly if
you have a boat. Open fires are illegal in the National Parks and you should
ask permission if camping on private land (above the high tide mark). There is
no set government camping policy as yet and no permit is required. It is
advised that you let the Department Environmental and Coastal Resources know
where you are going and you can contact Brian Riggs at (649) 941 5122. Please
adhere to the general wilderness etiquette guideline of ‘take only pictures,
leave only footprints’ anywhere you go in the TCI. Camping trips can be arranged through Amphibious Adventures.
