Wade’s Green Plantation & Field Roads

·         The western half of North Caicos has some of the productive soils in the whole archipelago. Consequently it became a successful cotton plantation area during the Loyalist era in the latter 18th and early 19th centuries.

·         Wade Stubbs established a 3000 acre farm near the village of Kew and was boarded on all sides by a number of others.

·         What is unique about this area is the survival of some of the original ‘tropical dry forest’ that once covered much of the islands prior to its clearance for lumber and cultivation so many years ago.

·         The rocky nature of the island also resulted in the construction of numerous meticulously built stone walls and it is along these that we follow to best explore the woodlands today.

·         The height of the trees around Wade’s Green provide much welcome shade and allow for some of the easier hiking offered by Amphibious Adventures.

·         Learn about the history of the Loyalist planters in the TCI. Soak up the atmosphere of their ruined farms and imagine what life was like for these hardy pioneers and their luckless slaves.

·         Enjoy the foliage and observe the many different lizards, butterflies and small little birds that make the forests their home. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for the Pygmy boa constrictors, Tailless Whip scorpions and Golden Silk spiders; all harmless you’ll be glad to know.
