Donkey Railway & Caves
· This is an adventurous hike inland to visit impressive caves and see a variety of birdlife, plant life, and perhaps even a wild donkey or two.
· The route follows the old donkey railway that was established in the late 19th century to extract bat guano from the caves. The ground is fairly even although the trail twists and winds through the thorny bush and scrub land and includes a scenic traverse across a creek over a rocky causeway.
· Protective clothing and solid footwear are essential and care must be taken over some sections. The whole trail is a 5 mile round trip.
· Read more about the caves in the East Caicos Cave section of this website. You can certainly expect to get dirty, sweaty, and tired as you explore the array of large rooms, tight passages, and secret entrances scattered throughout the various cave systems.
· A reasonable level of fitness and agility are required for both the caves and trails.
· The final cave along the trail offers a chance to cool off with a swim in the clear water.
· Amphibious offers a trip to complete the trail as a long day trip from Providenciales and as an overnight adventure with accommodation in a villa on Middle Caicos or camping on the beach at East Caicos.
· See the Island Hopping section for options that can include a partial visit to the caves.
· Contact Amphibious Adventures for more information and look at the events calendar for scheduled group expeditions.
